Over the last few days in Geneva, The Peoples Peaceful Protest: Geneva NY has taken to the streets, calling for justice and recognition of not only the violence committed against George Floyd in Minneapolis but the everyday violence perpetrated against all black people in this country, including our own community. For too long, our society has normalized the abuse, oppression, and murder of black people. For too long, the police—the very people who are supposed to be tasked with protecting us—have been increasingly militarized, enabling and endorsing their use of lethal force to perpetuate white supremacism. For too long, too many have stayed silent. The organizers of The People’s Peaceful Protest are asking all Genevans committed to ending racist, brutal policing to join them and demand change.
As is the case all over the country, young, Black women are taking their rightful place as leaders of this movement. The Geneva Women’s Assembly is proud to stand with these activists. We are grateful for their efforts to bring our community together and advocate for meaningful change. We encourage all of our members and followers to amplify their message and support them as they strive to bring justice to our community. For those who are able, the group’s next demonstration will be today at 1:30 at the “Public Safety” Building.
